History of the Penn Go Society

Founded in 2003 at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, the Penn Go Society was registered with the American Go Association in the fall of the following year. Since then the club has expanded to 35-40 AGA members, making us one of the largest Go clubs in the country.

The Penn Go Society is dedicated to the teaching and service of Go. In addition to co-organizing the 2007 U.S. Go Congress, we have also hosted AGA tournaments in conjunction with the Philadelphia Baduk Association and performed city-outreach events, including the 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 Philadelphia Cherry Blossom Festivals, as well as the 2006 and 2007 Celebrate Japan! Festivals. In 2008, we gave a number of Go demonstrations at various branches of the Free Public Library of Philadelphia, as well as held our first Go workshop with Jennie Shen, 2p.

On March 7-8, 2009, we hosted our second annual Go workshop with Yuan Zhou, 8d, at the University of Pennsylvania. We also participated in the 2009 Philadelphia Cherry Blossom Festival on Sunday, April 5, for an amazing afternoon showcasing the best of Japanese arts and culture!
